Barcelona is without doubt Europe’s best-known beach city, combining urban sprawl with immaculate white sandy coastline. Although Barcelona’s many, many hotels are mostly clustered in the centre, the city has a fair few hotels right up by the beaches. Which to choose depends a lot on your travelling intentions. So we’ve prepared a list of five beach hotels in Barcelona for five different occasions: partying, relaxing, mediterranean glamour, tighter budget, and for a really beachy experience.

One for partying

Fuelled mostly by travelling young revellers, Barcelona’s club and party scene has grown beyond recognition over the last decade or so, and the beach night clubs are the prized target. So if you’re in the mood to join in the buzzing night life around Barceloneta beach, the Hotel Occidental Atenea Mar is one to consider. At just 20mins walk from the clubs, this hotel caters for all the partying needs: it’s adult only (so no need to worry about pesky children while recovering from the night before), it’s got a gorgeous roof-top pool, it doesn’t break the bank, and, of course is right by the ‘platja (Catalan for beach).

One for relaxing

Looking for something less active? We’ve got you covered. The five star Pullman Barcelona Skipper hotel, located right by Barceloneta beach offers the perfect oasis – but leaves the option to party open, should the mojo kick-in. The hotel has an incredibly inviting roof-top terrace and lounge.

One for a tighter budget

Travelodge Barcelona Poblenou, is a no-thrills hotel that offers everything you need. Located a little inland, it is just 10 minutes’ walk from the Bogatell beachfront, which is just a few hundred metres north from Barceloneta. What’s more, the hotel is conveniently located a couple of minutes from Llacuna Metro Station.

One for mediterranean glamour

Here you need to leave the confines of the city and head south down the coast to Sitges. The ever-popular town, with its quaint centre, surrounded by millionaire’s villas and yachts, offers a glamourous alternative to Barcelona’s beaches. Trains take between 35 and 40 minutes to Barcelona Sants, and are very frequent. The Hotel Calipolis sits right on the famed Sitges promenade above the Bassa Rodona beach, and is the perfect setting to live out the mediterranean dream.

One for a really beachy experience – perfect for kids

With a few less A-listers, Castelldefels, a small town between Sitges and Barcelona, boasts the expansive Platja de Castelldefels, which is about as good as beaches get. Just 20 minutes train ride from Barcelona’s Sants station, Castelldefels, with its pristine beach, is ideal for a family trip. The Hotel Bel Air offers all the amenities, jaw-dropping sea views inclusive, you might need.
